Federal Government Working to Keep Americans Safe on 4th of July; CPSC leads Multi-Agency Effort with Departments of Justice, Homeland Security, and ATF- At a news conference on the National Mall today, CPSC Chairman Hal Stratton led the federal push to keep Americans safe as they prepare to celebrate America’s independence. Stratton was joined by Peter Keisler, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division at the U.S. Department of Justice; Dennis McKenzie, Director of Seizures and Penalties for Customs and Border Patrol at the Department of Homeland Security; and Lewis Raden, Assistant Director for Enforcement Programs with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The group urged consumers to follow safety guidelines and use only legal fireworks.
CPSC Holds Public Hearing in Tampa, Florida on Swimming Pool Safety- In recent years, an average of about 250 children under age 5 drowned annually in swimming pools nationwide. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) currently is intensifying its efforts to reduce the rate of child drowning deaths, and deaths and injuries due to entrapments in pool and spa suction outlets. As part of this effort, CPSC is holding a public hearing on swimming pool safety at the University of South Florida in Tampa.
