CPSC Warns Of Hazards from Heaters and Fireplaces- Since this winter began, a 13-year-old girl in Fairmount Heights, Md., and a 33-year-old woman in Kansas City, Kan., died in fires ignited by electric space heaters. Three children, ages 4, 5, and 9, from Rome, N.Y., died in a fire in which bedding was pushed up against a heater. Two girls, ages 7 and 4, from Walden, N.Y., died in a fire associated with a “wood pellet” stove and a mother and son from Long Island died when their fireplace sparked a fire in the basement. Four adults and five children in Seattle, Wash., all suffered carbon monoxide poisoning when they brought a charcoal-burning hibachi inside.
California Company To Pay $200,000 Civil Penalty For Importing and Selling Illegal Children's Toys - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is announcing today that Imperial Toy Corp., of Los Angeles, Calif,, has agreed to pay a $200,000 civil penalty for importing and selling childrens toys that violated federal safety standards. To protect young children from choking, aspiration, or ingestion hazards, federal law prohibits toys intended for children under three from having small parts.
CPSC Chairman Hal Stratton Announces New General Counsel- The Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) today announced the hiring of John Gibson Mullan as General Counsel for CPSC. Mr. Mullan will begin his tenure with CPSC on January 9, 2004.
CPSC Announces Change in Price of Lighters Included in Safety Standard - Child safety mechanisms on cigarette lighters have saved many lives and prevented thousands of fires. The mechanisms are required on all novelty and disposable lighters, and on low-cost, refillable lighters. Starting March 1, 2004, refillable lighters with an import value of $2.25 or less will be required to be child-resistant – up from the original import value of $2 or less established in 1993.
